Lip colour has made its big comeback as mask mandates drop in cities across the world. But with inflation hitting parts of Europe - could this be a sign the infamous ‘lipstick index’ has returned?
A term first created by Estée Lauder’s former CEO, the lipstick effect suggests how a sinking economy can actually have a positive effect on lipstick sales.
The theory is that consumers turn to affordable luxuries when higher-priced items are out of reach – with lipstick being the perfect example of how we still indulge in smaller treats to uplift our mood, even if we have less money to spend.
According to a report by NPD Group, lip cosmetics revenue increased by 48% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 2021. That’s double the growth of other products in the beauty category.
With sales of lipstick predicted to soar, now is the perfect time to reconsider your cosmetics offering. Here are some of our favourite lip products from the biggest beauty brands.
